When I consider the teachers with considerable influence that I have known in my teaching life, they have a number of things in common:
a) they are well versed on school and curriculum issues
b) they are credible teachers – strong rapport with their students and strong discipline skills
c) they are assertive
d) they are honest and forthright
These are all wonderful qualities.
However occasionally people with influence are also the loudest and most aggressive personalities who get their way because no one wants to argue or cause a scene in a staff meeting. Perhaps that is only my perspective (speaking as someone who does not really like confrontation!). Perhaps in their view, they are just the epitome of the qualities I mentioned in my top list….
